Since July 24, Russia has blocked five areas of the Black Sea, its total square makes 118 570 km2, which is over a quarter of sea’s total square (436 402 km2), as Ukrainian Military Portal reported referring to the information from international regulations to mariners.
The mentioned regions block usual and recommended international waterways to Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, and Ukraine.
The exact reason was not mentioned. Some areas have “dangerous navigation”, some are closed for battle exercise.
It should be noted that official institutions did not comment on this.
The news agency reported that Russia does not have so much land and above-water forces to have a need to block such square in respective areas to hold battle exercise. Besides, the country does not have the required amount of watercraft to control and block respective areas to provide security of navigation and primarily fishing and some fisheries-related enterprises.
Before Sea Breeze 2019, Russia blocked the area of 8000 km2 in the area of location of international drills with ships from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, U.K., and the U.S.
