Russia backed hackers break in US electric network

The hackers connected with Russia broke the American electric companies’ networks. It is supposed that they might carry out a blackout with the access they have, as The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the news agency, the group of the hackers known as Dragonfly or Energetic Bear, managed to bypass the security of the American electric companies networks. The Department of Homeland Security provided the information. The representatives of the department supposed that the group is connected with the Kremlin.

It is specified that the hack was possible due to the attacks at the partners of the companies affected. The hackers managed to access the computers of the monitoring service which allows them to make disruptions with electric energy supply.

Besides, the representatives of the Department of Homeland Security stated that probably, not all of the affected companies know this  - in some cases the hackers used the actual staff members data to get the access. The aim of the break-in – to steal information or prepare possible conflicts – remains unknown.
