Russian President Vladimir Putin in an annual message to the Federal Assembly said that active testing of the new intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat began in Russia. This is reported by Interfax.
"At present, the Defense Ministry together with the rocket and space industry have begun an active phase of testing a new missile complex with a heavy intercontinental missile, which we called Sarmat," Putin said.
According to him, this missile system will replace the "Voyevoda" complex, created in the Soviet Union. He stressed that the possibilities of Sarmat will be greater than that of Voyevoda. "With a weight of over 200 tons, it has a short active part of the flight, which makes it difficult to intercept with the missile defense. The range of the new heavy rocket, the number and power of the combat blocks is greater than that of Voyevoda, "the Russian head added.
"Sarmat" will be equipped with a wide range of nuclear munitions of high power, including hypersonic ones. And also with the most advanced missile defense systems," Putin said.
The intercontinental ballistic missile "Sarmat" has no limitations on the range of flight and overcomes the resistance of any missile defense system, Putin said. "The Voyevoda (heavy intercontinental ballistic missile) has a range of 11 thousand kilometers, but the new system has no limitations on the range," the head of the Russian Federation said after demonstrating the computer model of Sarmat's flight.
The Russian president stressed that Sarmat is capable of attacking targets both through the North and through the South Pole. "Sarmat" is a very formidable weapon. Due to its characteristics, it does not interfere with any, even advanced missile defense systems," Putin said.
The head of the Russian Federation also talked about the successful launch of a new cruise missile with a nuclear power part in Russia, which allows, he said, to create "a fundamentally new type of weapons - a strategic nuclear weapons complex with a similar power part."
