“The toponymy field requires special attention. We face the situation then Russian names used in past centuries and decades by our researchers and travelers, are being displaced from the global map,” Putin said.
According to him, such things are most noticeable in the Antarctic, but not only there: “The examples of names’ substitutions are not only in the far Antarctic. There are examples here closer. I will not rest on it now”.
He noted that the absence of modern Russian maps influences this.
“Only foreign maps are available, where, as a rule, only secondary names appear,” Russian president stated.
According to him, Russia will not impose anything on anybody, but it cannot neglect the distort of the historic and geographic truth.
He ordered the Rosreestr (The Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography, - ed.), the experts of Russian Geographical Society and Russia’s Defence Ministry to analyze the world atlas. Besides, he ordered the Defence Ministry to provide access to the map documents as the “secrecy label on many maps are outdated and looks archaically”.
