"Reserving the right for retaliatory measures, we will not lower ourselves to the level of "kitchen", irresponsible diplomacy and further steps towards the restoration of Russian-American relations will be taken on the basis of the policy, carried out by the administration of President Donald Trump," the statement said.
It was also stated that Russian diplomats expelled from the United States will celebrate a New Year’s holiday in the circle of relatives and friends.
"We are not going to create problems for American diplomats. We will not deport anyone. We will not prohibit their families and children from using their familiar resting places in the New Year’s holidays. Moreover, I invite all the children of American diplomats accredited in Russia on the New Year and Christmas tree in Kremlin," Putin said in his statement.
At the same time, Kremlin considers the new US sanctions as a provocation aimed at further undermining the Russian-American relations.
He expressed his regret that "the administration of President Barack Obama ends its work this way," but, nevertheless, congratulated him and his family on the occasion of the New Year.
As it was reported earlier, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered to expel 35 American diplomats from the Russian Federation in response to US sanctions.
"We, of course, cannot leave unanswered the insults of the kind, reciprocity is the law of diplomacy and foreign relations," he said. "Thus, the Russian Foreign Ministry and officials of other authorities have suggested the Russian president to announce 31 personnel of the US Embassy in Moscow and four diplomats from the Consulate General in St. Petersburg persona non grata." Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
