NATO member countries interceptor aircraft in 2016 have made an unprecedented number of sorties on alert since the end of the Cold War, most of which were conducted because of Russian aviation, reports DW.
"Last year, interceptor aircraft of NATO member countries made 870 sorties on alert... The overwhelming majority of registered during the year 2016 cases when NATO combat aircraft ascended to the skies in alarm, were provoked by the actions of Russian aviation. We counted 780 such cases, "the report said.
It is noted that the remaining - 90 cases - were caused by combat aircraft of other states that are not members of the Alliance, or by passenger and cargo aircraft that were not identified immediately.
It is noteworthy that in 2015 there were almost twice less of similar cases of flights of NATO interceptor aircraft - 410.
