Viktor Medvedchuk, the politician and representative of the "Opposition platform - For Life", flew to Russia to agree on the release of the Ukrainian sailors, as the Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the press conference.
"Concerning the exchange, we discussed it. Medvedchuk, under Poroshenko's request, is dealing with this all the time. Recently, he arrived in Moscow and brought up the issue of the release of the Ukrainian military detained in the Kerch Strait, in the Black Sea in particular, but I have already said that this question might be decided only after the criminal proceeding is over," he said.
As we reported earlier, the Russian Navy attacked the Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait in the Sea of Azov. The vessels were damaged, and the crews captured by the Russian special services. Ukraine and the Western governments consider the attack an act of aggression. The Ukrainian sailors were taken to a remand center in Crimea, and then in Moscow, charged with the 'illegal crossing of the Russian territorial waters'. All sailors deny their guilt, claiming they are prisoners of war.
