It is still early to talk about congratulations to the leader of the presidential race in Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky by Russian President Vladimir Putin. TASS news agency reported, citing Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
“It is too early to talk about congratulations to Mr. Zelensky by Vladimir Putin and about the possibilities for cooperation,” Peskov said.
He pointed out that they intend to "asses Zelensky by his concrete deeds, concrete steps."
“Moreover, let’s take into account the fact that there are no official results, which have not been drawn up yet,” Kremlin representative said.
"Moscow respects the choice of the Ukrainian people, moreover that this choice is the vivid one. At the same time, the legitimacy of the process was questioned as 3 million Ukrainian citizens were not allowed to vote because they live on the territory of the Russian Federation,” Peskov outlined.
“Russia is ready to communicate with the president, who gained trust from the citizens of Ukraine, we are interested in normalization of our relations,” Matviyeno stated.
According to the speaker, Russia has to decide whether to recognize or not to recognize the results of the presidential elections in Ukraine.
“The press more often reports about recognition of the Ukrainian election by Russia. Actually, there is no such lawful obligation to recognize or not to recognize the elections. The main thing is that Ukrainian people recognize them,” Matviyenko said.
