Strategic military drills Kavkaz-2020 kicked off in Russia's Southern Military District. Press office of Russian Defense Ministry reported that on September 20.
The commanding officer is Valeriy Gerasimov, Chief of General Staff of Russia's Armed Forces and the First Deputy Minister of Defense.
The maneuvers will be running until September 26. The exercises involve 80,000 staff, including 1,000 foreign troops from Armenia, Belarus, China, Myanmar and Pakistan. The military representatives from Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka plan to participate as observers.
Most of the action on the ground will be taking place on domestic firing ranges of the Southern Military District. Up to 250 tanks, 450 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers and 200 artillery and missile systems will participate. Ships of the Black Sea Fleet and the Capsian flotilla will join the action, too, enjoying the company of the Iranian Navy vessels.
