Interpol cannot search for ex-presidential candidate and opposition leader of Belarus Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, head of the national central bureau of Interpol in Belarus Dmitry Medvedev stated on Belarus - 1 TV channel on November 2, according to TASS.
"After studying the materials provided by us, a decision was made by a special working group - a structural unit of the General Secretariat [Interpol] on the impossibility of using Interpol channels to search for this citizen," Medvedev said.
However, he stressed that Interpol has no doubts about the legality of criminal cases initiated in the territory of the Republic of Belarus.
As it was reported earlier, the Belarusian KGB accused Tsikhanouskaya of involvement in terrorist activities. The country's investigative committee opened a case against Tsikhanouskaya under Article 382 of the Criminal Code.
After the last year elactions in Belarus, the leader of Belarusian opposition Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya left for Lithuania.
Later Tsikhanouskaya was announced wanted in interstate search in Russia.
A few months later the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has removed Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya from the interstate search base at the initiative of Belarusian law enforcement bodies.
In July, Belarus requested Lithuania to hand over fugitive opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya without naming the reason. Lithuania refused the request.
