Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel expressed her concern about Russia’s influence on European politics, particularly its support of right-wing populist parties in Europe. She has stated this on the press conference in Berlin, as Ukrinform reported.
Merkel expressed such an opinion when commenting on the scandal of Russian financing of the Italian political party Lega Nord (Northern League). She emphasized this is only the Italian government’s business.
"We have repeatedly seen how right-wing populist parties get great support from Russia. And this makes us worry," Merkel stated.
The Chancellor noted that everybody who wants to have a good partnership with Russia should be realistic.
We recall that Buzzfeed published the material on July 10 about negotiations of Lega Nord’s politicians with the Kremlin representatives related to the funding of the party. It was expected that the political force would receive $65 mn from oil supply. According to the information, during the visit to Moscow in October 2018 the assistant of Matteo Salvini Gianluca Savoini organized the meeting with the unnamed Kremlin high officials where Italians tried to came to an agreement about Russian oil supply within a year equaled to $1,5 bn, 4% from which the Lega Nord should have received. However Salvini was not present at this meeting and he denied getting money from Russian investors.
