Ukrainian football player Vasyl Vasylenko, whom Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) accuses of spying for Ukraine, has been arrested in Moscow. It was reported by TASS, citing the source in law enforcement agencies.
"Russian FSB officers, with the participation of Russian law enforcement agencies, established the involvement of Ukrainian citizen Vasylenko Vasyl Ivanovych in committing a crime under Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Espionage"). He was charged, he is being held in one of the capital's pre-trial detention center," the source said.
As you know, Vasyl Vasylenko is a citizen of Ukraine, he played as a defender for FC Tavria Novotroitske, FC Torpedo Melitopol, and FC Druzhba Berdyansk from 1992 to 2001.
In October 2019, he was arrested in Moscow for committing a crime under Part 1 of Art. 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Illegal movement across the customs border of superpotent, poisonous, toxic, explosive and radioactive substances "). The charges were reclassified as espionage this spring.
As we reported earlier, Russia’s court sentenced American Paul Whelan to imprisonment, accusing him of espionage.
