The member of the European Parliament Rebecca Harms stated that the EU member states would have to leave Interpol if Russian Aleksandr Prokopchuk becomes the head of the organization, as she wrote o Twitter.
I agree with @anders_aslund : if a Russian Deputy Police Minister gets in leadership of Interpol EU states have to leave Interpol. @VeraJourova @FedericaMog @JunckerEU @INTERPOL_HQ https://t.co/9JLTkXy0jc— Rebecca Harms (@RebHarms) November 18, 2018
Reportedly, the elections of the new head of Interpol are scheduled for November 21. Interpol has to re-elect the chairman of the organization after its head Meng Hongwei went missing. Therefore, it was reported that China conducts an investigation on him concerning corruption.
Major General of the Russian police Oleksandr Prokopchuk is a favorite on the elections of Interpol’s head. From 2006 to 2011, he served as a deputy head of National Central Bureau of Interpol of Russia’s Internal Ministry. Then, he becomes the head of this organization. In 2016, the Major General became the Vice-President of Interpol.
Arsen Avakov, Ukraine’s Internal Minister, thinks that as an aggressor state, Russia’s perspective to head the Interpol is a threat to the entire world.
