EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell believes that Brussels needs to seek the ways of cooperation with Moscow.
El Pais quoted the Spanish diplomat who claimed that currently, the EU-Russia relations are on the lowest level in many years.
"However, we need to search the ways of mutual understanding with Russia in the matters where we need it - like the Arctic and the energy matters... We need a deterrency strategy with Russia; a strategy of denial of hazardous initiatives and making deals on the necessary matters", Borrell said.
At that, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs said that one of the reasons to improve the relations with Russia is that Moscow wields a lot of weaponry, inculding the nuclear arms, and the "new unconventional technologies, which it uses without thinking twice".
The politician also supported the initiative coming from France and Germany, as these two countries offered to normalize the dialogue with Moscow. On the other hand, the official sees no point in inviting Putin to the G27 summit. "I am not quite sure that Putin surrounded by the 27 [EU representatives] is the most suitable format", Borrell said.
