The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark Anders Samuelsen urged the EU to impose sanctions against Russia for confrontation in the Azov Sea and illegal detention of the Ukrainian sailors, as said in his statement.
“I think that the EU has to react to Russia’s aggressive behavior. If Russia does not want to release the sailors, I will take the lead on impositions of new sanctions of the EU,” he stated.
The Minister would insist on an enhanced reaction of the EU in response to Russia’s attack and detention of the Ukrainian vessels and sailors near Kerch Strait.
January 29, a joint trip of the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Denmark will be held. The diplomats will visit Hnutove checkpoint and Mariupol port. Besides, a group of the EU officials is to visit Ukraine’s regions adjacent to Azov Sea.
January 31 Anders Samuelsen will have an informal meeting with his EU colleagues in Bucharest. They will discuss the Ukrainian issue.
Besides, Ukraine is officially included in the agenda of the coming meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers, which is scheduled for February 18. It was initiated by Denmark, whose Foreign Minister will raise the issue of imposition of sanctions if Russia does not release the Ukrainian sailors.
This week the EU will issue an official diplomatic protest note due to the fact that Russia continues keeping 24 Ukrainian sailors in custody.
