The office of the President of Ukraine regards the detention of Mikheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi as revenge against him. This was announced by the adviser to the head of the President's Office Mykhailo Podolyak, RBC-Ukraine reports.
"The news of the detention of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili on the territory of Georgia should not be taken as something normal. Especially the tough attitude with which this news is presented from the Georgian side and which testifies to a certain motive for revenge against Saakashvili," Podolyak said.
According to him, now Ukrainian diplomats continue to establish the details of Saakashvili's detention.
He also added that now the head of the Georgian Embassy in Ukraine has been invited to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to receive additional explanations regarding the detention.
Saakashvili, who lived in Ukraine for several years and was granted Ukrainian citizenship, was detained on Friday upon his arrival ahead of local elections. Despite him being sentenced to prison in absentia in Georgia, Saakashvili said he wanted to return to help “save the country” and called for post-election street protests.
