Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin called Russia’s note on the prosecution of sailors to be primitive trap and scam, which caught someone from the Office of President Volodymyr Zelensky as Klimkin reported on Facebook.
“To eliminate all issues I demonstrate you two diplomatic notes. The first one is the Russian trap, by the way, it is very primitive; the second one is our response, revealing the hidden motives of the Russian Federation. However, why hidden? Russia does not hide that it does not want to fulfill the decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Instead, it a) demands from us to recognize that our sailors could commit a crime; b) induces us to recognize the legitimacy of trial over them according to the Russian legislation; c) invites us to be overtaken before the Criminal Procedure Code of Russia and recognize occupation of Russia indirectly,” Klimkin stated.
Foreign Minister emphasized that Russia can without any problems finish all inner processes necessary for release of the sailors, including within the multilateral documents, which act in Ukraine and Russia.
“The trap was prepared for our sailors, our judicial and diplomatic team, leadership of the country. Unfortunately, it seems that someone in the Office of the president was obviously caught. To be caught by the Russian diplomatic “scam” is to defame the sailors, who insist before the Russian trial for six months that Russia has no right to judge them,” the minister added.
The decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is unequivocal: Russia should immediately and surely release sailors and vessels.
“And of someone would like to guarantee himself comfortable meetings in Osaka; it will not take place. We do everything to make these meetings to be efficient first of all, and Russia explained the world how it will fulfill its international commitment and return Ukrainian sailors home,” the minister added.
Earlier Volodymyr Zelensky was distraught that he got to know about response of Foreign Ministry to Russia’s note from the internet but not from the ministry. Now the President of Ukraine demands public explanation of the ministry.
On May 25, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea obliged Russia to immediately release 24 Ukrainian sailors and three vessels, which were captured in Kerch Strait, November 2018 and provide their return to Ukraine.
We recall, on November 25, 2018, Russian border guards seized the Ukrainian Yana Kapu raid tug and small armored artillery boats Berdyansk and Nikopol of the Naval Forces of Ukraine in the Kerch Strait area, using weapons.
As a result of the incident, 24 Ukrainian sailors were detained and arrested. They were transported from Crimea to the Moscow Lefortovo detention facility. In addition, three Ukrainian sailors wounded during the shelling by the Russians were transferred to the Prison Hospital.
