The decision of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to simplify the obtaining of the citizenship for Russians is tied with the policy of the U.S. and the UK. These countries do not want to provide Russians with the political asylum, as the Russian parliament reported citing its chairman Vyacheslav Volodin.
“…the statement of President of Ukraine Zelensky shows not the decision of Ukraine to provide the political asylum to the citizens of Russia but the decision of the U.S. and the UK to restrict or stop its provision to Russians,” the Head of the Russian State Duma said.
He is convinced that the U.S. State Department is behind Zelensky’s decision to simplify the obtaining of citizenship for politically undesirable Russians.
“The U.S. and the UK do not need the applicants of the political asylum from Russia. It is expensive to maintain them… All this became the ground to send people who ask the political asylum to Ukraine,” he said.
Besides, Volodin called the decision of Zelensky to provide the citizenship to Russians populism as people leave Ukraine massively in search of work. For example, up to 3 million Ukrainians work in Russia and almost an eighth person in Ukraine works outside Ukraine.
“Those people who violated the law of the Russian Federation, stole and want to escape punishment and get the political asylum will be sent to Ukraine instead of the U.S. and the UK, where they will face a miserable fate with the refusal from the native language and faith, division and creation of the tension between our states,” the politician said.
On August 13, President Zelensky facilitated the process of receiving Ukrainian citizenship for foreigners and people without citizenship, who protected the country, and for Russians who were subjected to political persecution.
Besides, in 2019, President Zelensky granted Ukrainian citizenship to 841 people.
