President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and first lady Olena Zelenska laid flowers to the Holodomor Memorial in the downtown Washington. This is mentioned in the message posted by Zelensky's press office.
"This memorial is a pivotal symbol of solidarity of the American people with Ukrainians, and a reminder about one of the most horrible tragedies in the history of our people and entire humankind", the president said.
The head of the government and his wife laid the symbolic wreaths of wheat to the Memorial. Then, members of Ukraine's official delegation approached the monument to do the same.
The Holodomor Memorial was opened in the U.S. capital city in November 2015.
In September 2018, the US Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs approved the resolution, which defined the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as the act of genocide of Ukrainians.
More than 20 American states recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 the act of genocide.
Holodomor, or the Great Famine was a man-made campaign of mass starvation organized by the Soviet government; it led to the death of almost four million people in 1932-1933.
