The newly elected president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky should improve the relations with the Russian Federation. The head of the political council of "The Opposition Platform - For Life" party Viktor Medvedchuk stated this in the big interview with 112.Ukraine.
“Ukraine needs this, Zelensky needs this. Zelensky should improve the relationship from many reasons, and I can name many arguments to prove this. However, not Moscow should think of the way how to do this. I don’t think that there are some criteria for the future in Moscow, and how difficult this future will be with the new leader of our country. Moreover, the authorities commented on this issue immediately after the elections, including Mr. Medvedev, I remember he assessed the economic relations absolutely correctly. He was talking about the very part of the economic relations he was working on in Russia, and according to Medvedev, the situation is rather awful. Naturally, he compared the situation to the one it used to be, the relations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine in the economic field,” the politician said.
Besides, Medvedchuk pointed out that he agrees with the very assessment, that the situation is rather awful. However, Russia remains for Ukraine the main trade and economic partner and concerning the import and export as well, according to the results even of the last year.
“Despite this fact, those relations are awful indeed, because their potential is much bigger than we have. He said that in order to reinforce the economic relations, it is necessary to take into account the following notions: calculation, pragmatism, and sobriety. If it happens, the economic relations between Ukraine and Russia have a chance to recover. Putin’s press office commented on this issue as well, they respect the choice of the Ukrainian people, but it is premature to talk about mutual co-operation. This means that Moscow will look at the president's first actions, not at the things he would say, but at the things he would do. And depending on this, we will build the relationship. But I do not think that Russia has such a criterion that they only think about this question - it will be difficult for them or simply anyway. I do not believe that this is their task. This task is the Ukrainian one – the relations with Russia,” Medvedchik added.
