President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky participated in the ceremony of tribute to the deceased heroes of the Battle of Kruty that took place on January 29, 1918. The head of the state laid flowers to the memorial cross of the Heroes of Kruty at Prince Askold's grave in Kyiv. Press department of the President's Office reported that.
After a minute of silence, the national anthem of Ukraine was played. The Honorary Guards saluted, using their weapons and marched near the memorial cross.
The president put the candle to graves of Oleksandr Klitynsky (deceased during the Revolution of Dignity) and Markiyan Paslavsky (died during the Battle of Ilovaisk in 2014).
"The threat for Ukraine is still the same - both now and a hundred years ago. During the Kruty battle, the country's defenders basically did the same that the warriors currently did in Mariinka. However, the conditions are different; we are really stronger now. Our dreams are a bit different because we've got a lot of things that the previous generations of 1918 didn't even dare to think of", the head of the staste said.
Zelensky urged fellow Ukrainians to remember the honor and sincerity that the Ukrainian warriors fought with - in Donbas and Kruty alike.
Apart from the president, other top statesmen joined the ceremony. There were Head of the Parliament Dmytro Razumkov, Prime Minister Denys Shmygal and Head of the President's Office Andriy Yermak.
