President Volodymyr Zelensky took part in events on the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Defenders to commemorate the memory of the military who died in the struggle for the independence of Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the President's Office.
Zelensky noted that "such a wound on the body of Ukrainian history is unlikely to ever heal."
“We can hardly hope that such a wound on the body of the history of Ukraine, such a wound on the heart of the parents of all the victims will ever heal. The Ukrainian government must do everything so that this wound does not heal, so that every name no one will forget and every day we told that such tragedies in Ukraine took place," Zelensky said.
On this day in 2014, the largest simultaneous losses were incurred at the exit of the ATO forces from Ilovaisk. The names of 223 servicemen who died that day in 2014-2019 were announced. After each surname, the soldiers of the guard of honor rang the bell and saluted from their personal weapons in one volley.
"Today we honor the memory of the Heroes of Ukraine, our best Ukrainians who defended borders, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The day is not accidental - it was on this day that the Ilovaisk tragedy occurred - the Ilovaisk cauldron. We must not forget this day, we must not forget every name, I asked how long we announced the names of the victims - it lasted about 40 minutes. Unfortunately, we cannot reduce this time, but we can do, as a state, so that this time does not increase at all," the president said.
