The cancellation of the upcoming local elections in Donbas is one of the main stumbling blocks in the further implementation of the Minsk agreements. This was announced by the Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life, Ukrainian MP Viktor Medvedchuk on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada.
He stressed that the changes to the resolution of July 15 on elections in Donbas were crucial, because "everything today comes down to the fact that this is a stumbling block in the issues of further Minsk talks."
“Moreover, recent meetings in the Normandy format, that is, meetings of the advisers to the heads of state, as well as in the framework of the Trilateral Contact Group, have shown that there is a firm position. It is crucial for the representatives of the temporarily occupied territories - Donetsk, Luhansk, and Moscow. If the resolution is not amended, and there is the question, first of all, about item 4, where conditions under which it is possible to conduct elections in the uncontrolled territory of Donbas are envisaged. That is enshrined specifically in the Minsk agreements. And if this point is not changed or abolished, it will mean that the Minsk agreements have been put to an end. Today this is a №1 question. Moreover, as is known from the discussion in the tripartite format, yesterday the occupied territories and Russia raised the question at the contact group that no action could take place until this item - the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of July 15, 2020 - was changed or repealed,” Medvedchuk said.
He also added that the refusal of the Ukrainian side to participate in the joint patrol in the area of the Shumy village "causes great regret."
"This applies, inter alia, to non-compliance by the Ukrainian side with the peace agreements on the establishment of a ceasefire of July 22, according to the representatives of the occupied territories. In fact, yesterday all the parties, expect Ukrainians, said that such a waiver of inspection, as well as of the issues of changing the relevant paragraph of the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada means that Ukraine withdrew from the ceasefire agreements of July 22, 2020. This is indeed extremely negative for our country. I think that these actions of the delegation are dictated by President Zelensky himself, who, in my opinion, and I am sure, does not have the political will for reaching a peaceful settlement of the Donbas conflict, which is why there are such consequences. That is why today we have a fact that does not bring us closer, but, on the contrary, takes us away from the peace in Donbas," the politician summed up.
As we reported earlier, according to Viktor Medvedchuk, residents of the controlled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk have the constitutional right to vote in the upcoming local elections, but the authorities deprive them of it.
