Today, July 4, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with representatives of state and commercial banks and considered proposals on candidates for the Head of the National Bank post. This was reported by the press service of the President's Office.
“I had three big discussion meetings as part of a professional dialogue. I met with all the chairmen of state banks of Ukraine, I wanted to get a candidate from them (for the NBU chairman, - ed.), and their personal impression of this situation. Everyone quite calmly accepts the dismissal of the NBU head. Everyone sees no risks," Zelensky said while talking to reporters in the Odesa region.
He also said that he met with all the deputy heads of the NBU and representatives of commercial banks of Ukraine.
“We study all three lists that the banking sector have proposed, through law enforcement agencies, to know what kind of people they are, what wealth and professional level they have,” the president said.
The head of state emphasized that he does not see any problem in holding meetings with candidates proposed for the post of NBU chairman, and noted that he had professional relations with Yakiv Smoly.
"We have very good relations, not only on a professional, but also on a human level," said Zelensky.
On June 1, Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Yakiv Smoliy wrote and submitted to the President of Ukraine a letter of resignation of his own volition.
“For a long time, the National Bank of Ukraine has been under systematic political pressure. This makes it impossible for me, as the chairman, to fulfill the responsibilities of the National Bank’s leadership and interact with other government bodies. I want to warn you against further attempts to undermine the institutional foundations of the central bank in Ukraine," Yakiv Smoliy stated.
On July 3, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine held an extraordinary plenary session to consider resignation of the Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine Yakiv Smoliy and Yuriy Terentyev from the position of the Chairman of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine.
