President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is outraged at the response of the Foreign Ministry, which reacted to Russia's diplomatic note regarding the release of Ukrainian sailors. Supposedly, Zelensky was not informed about this step in time. The Ukrainian leader said this at a briefing on June 27.
Recently, the Ukrainian side protested against the non-fulfillment of the decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea by Russia. It continues to detain illegally Ukrainian sailors captured in November 2018, in Kerch Strait, as the Foreign Ministry reported.
Russia also offered Ukraine to participate in the criminal prosecution of the sailors according to the Russian legislation.
“On June 25, Foreign Ministry of Ukraine got the note of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation, which contains cynical offer to provide the Ukrainian side written guarantees of participation of Ukraine in the continuation of the prosecution of the Ukrainian sailors in accordance with the Russian legislation. We consider this offer of Russia unacceptable and such that exacerbates argue between Ukraine and Russia on the immunity of the vessels. The Ukrainian side has already informed the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea about it,” the ministry underlined.
Foreign Ministry of Ukraine demands to fulfill the decision of the tribunal without any conditions and release captured sailors.
“We draw the attention of Kremlin, for the stop of illegal prosecution of Ukrainian sailors and fulfillment of the Order of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, there are enough mechanisms existing in the Russian legislation as well as existing multilateral international treaties, which members are Ukraine and Russia. Foreign Ministry of Ukraine demands once more to urgently inform about time and place of the release and return of the vessels under control of Ukraine and time and date of the pass of 24 illegally detained members of their crews to consular officials of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
