The U.S. government may demand that Russia closes one of its Consulate Generals in this country. Kommersant reported that on Friday with reference to diplomatic sources in Russia – without any further information about which one of the three offices may be shut down.
‘This could be Washington’s response to the sanctions introduced by Moscow; they foresee staff reduction in the U.S. Embassy in Russia and arrest of certain property there,’ reads the article in the Russian outlet.
Previously, the government negotiated on the opportunity to open another U.S. Consulate General in Russia; later, the White House dropped the idea.
Currently, the three U.S. consulate generals are in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok. Russia has four – in New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Houston.
