A closed-door meeting between US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker and Assistant to the President of Russia Vladimir Surkov ended in Minsk, as Radio Svoboda informs, referring to press secretary of MFA of Belarus Dmitriy Mironchik.
According to him, the press wasn’t allowed into the meeting, which started at 2 pm, and ended after 5 pm. The results of the meeting haven’t been announced yet.
The news agency says that the US Embassy in Minsk informed, that Kurt Volker is to brief on the meeting in Vilnius, on August 22, where the envoy is going to discuss the issue of regulating the conflict in Ukraine with Lithuanian government. It is expected, that the special representative will inform about the negotiations with Surkov then.
Previously, during his visit to Donbas, Volker said the U.S. treat the ongoing hostilities in eastern Ukraine as the consequences of the Russian aggression, not the internal conflict. According to him, Washington currently considers giving Ukraine lethal weaponry, which would prevent Russia from further acts of violence.
On August 23, Volker will travel to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he will join Secretary of Defense James Mattis in meetings with senior Ukrainian government officials to discuss next steps on diplomatic negotiations to restore Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
