The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko had a meeting with Kurt Volker, the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly. Volker presented the President with a symbolic hard copy of the declaration of Mike Pompeo, the U.S. State Secretary, as of July 15, 2018, which documents the U.S. position concerning the recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea, as the President’s Administration reports.
“With this declaration, the State Secretary Pompeo had clearly confirmed that the U.S. do not and never will recognize Russian annexation of Crimea,” Volker said.
At the same time, Volker added that this declaration in spirit and in letter is similar to the one adopted by the acting Secretary of State Sumner Welles in 1940 on the non-recognition of the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states.
Besides, Volker and Poroshenko discussed the recent events in Donbas and perspectives of deployment of the UN peacekeeping mission on its occupied territory.
Special attention was paid to the cooperation in the security and defence sphere between Ukraine and the U.S. and the cooperation on the way towards a further introduction of the reforms in our state.
The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly is being held in New York. Petro Poroshenko will deliver a speech at the session at 4pm New York time.
