The US Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker noted at BBC interview that the US actively discusses the issue of the provision of Armed Forced of Ukraine with the lethal arms to fight with Russia-backed militants in Donbas. He noted that he does not consider such step as provocative and the decision can help to change the Moscow approach.
‘The defensive arm that will allow Ukraine to protect itself and, for example, to withdraw the tanks, will also help to stop the Russian threats considering Ukraine’, Volker claimed.
Kurt Volker made the range of statements and defined the attitude of his country since the beginning of the work as the US Special Envoy.
On July 23, visiting the front-line Avdiivka, Volker claimed that the situation in the Eastern Ukraine is at the stage of the hot war and not the frozen conflict.
‘Our main aim is to restore the integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. As I understood, it is not the frozen conflict but the hot war’, he said.
Also, Volker claimed during the briefing in Kramatorsk that the US understands and sees what is going on in Donbas and the management of the conflict. Also, it was noted that the Donbas Conflict is not the civil war or inner conflict but the open aggression of Russia.
According to Volker, the strengthening of Ukraine is the best way to oppose the attacks on Ukraine and the Russian propaganda.
‘We should see Ukraine strong, viable, prosperous and strong by the democracy. It should be attractive for the Eastern regions’, he thinks.
The US Special Envoy visited not only the front-line of Ukraine but he also met with the representatives of Ukraine in political and humanitarian subgroups in the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine.
According to the Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and the representative of Ukraine Iryna Gerashchenko, the sides exchanged opinions on security issues, the humanitarian situation in Donbas and nonfulfillment of the Minsk Agreement during the meeting.
Moreover, Volker received the information from the Ukrainian side about the problems with the release of the hostages.
The US Special Envoy noted at his meeting with the parliamentarians that the next steps for the peaceful settlement of the conflict will be made following the results of his visit to Donbas.
Volker noted that there is the necessity to support people who live in the temporarily occupied territories.
It is interesting that the management of the information of the Verkhovna Rada edited the message at the website about the meeting of Volker with the MPs. Particularly, the Volker’s statements that it is necessary to reject the partisan interests to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine was cut.
