The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has declared the presidential elections in Belarus, which were held on August 9, illegitimate. The decision was supported by 228 MPs.
The online broadcast was conducted by 112 Ukraine TV channel.
"The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine believes that the presidential election in Belarus was neither free nor fair. The election was held in the complete absence of competition between candidates, free media, and authoritative observers from international organizations such as the OSCE and the Council of Europe," the text of the resolution says.
As we reported earlier, the Seimas of Lithuania passed the resolution, in which the parliamentarians called Svetlana Tsikhanouskaya the legally elected leader of Belarus.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, in his turn, recognized the presidential elections in Belarus and called them valid.
“We proceed from the assumption that the elections took place. I did it right away. We recognized their legitimacy. I congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on his victory in these elections,” the statement said.
