The veche in support of Mikheil Saakashvili gathered at Maidan Nezalezhnosti due to the decision of the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to revoke Saakashvili’s Ukrainian citizenship. About two hundred people gathered at veche and the police protect them. The audience brought their Ukrainian passports and put them up.
‘We gather today not to protest but to exchange our thoughts and plan the further actions’, the member of the Movement of New Forces Party Olga Galabala claimed this and added that the veche is the reaction of the indignant people on the revocation of Saakashvili’s citizenship.
‘We mobilize people for the calm civil protest in autumn. If we do not gather peacefully then somebody will do it instead of us using the force. The revocation of citizenship of Saakashvili is the fear and response on the things we should do. We will continue doing what we planned and return Saakashvili in Ukraine’, Galabala claimed.
The advocate of Saakashvili claimed that he will appeal against the decision of revocation of the Ukrainian citizenship at the Kyiv Court of Appeal.
‘Come to the court and support us when the date of the hearing will be defined’, he claimed. Also, the defense will demand the getting of the president’s decree.
As it was reported earlier Poroshenko revoked Ukrainian citizenship of Saakashvili. The State Migration Service of Ukraine confirmed this.
The department explained that Saakashvili lost the citizenship on the basis of the point 2, article 19 of the Decree on Citizenship, precisely on the basis of the false data that is indicated in the form. Saakashvili wrote that he is not under the investigation in Ukraine or in any other country but it is known that the former president was arrested in absentia in Georgia.
The migration service also noted that the MP Andry Lozovoy filed the request to the General Prosecutor Office concerning the citizenship of Saakashvili and the prosecutor’s office contacted the service. And the Commission on Citizenship Issue made the proper decision on the request.
