Recently the US-based East-West Institute and the National Committee on American Foreign Policy published a report stating that the US should support Serbia in its striving to become an EU member as European Western Balkans reported.
According to the report titled ‘Time for Action in the Western Balkans’, the US and the EU should resolve a number of the issues and possible conflict in such countries as – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and Serbia.
Moreover, they should oppose Russian interference into these countries life and confront the influence of the pro-Russian media with the alternative sources of information and support for independent media.
The key country in this policy is Serbia as the largest and most powerful country in the region. According to the report, ‘the NATO membership should remain an option for Serbia, but the expectations of the United States must be lowered because of the historical legacy of the Alliance’s military operations in the region, as well as the possibility of a vociferous opposition from Russia. Cooperation with NATO should continue, with the Alliance encouraging Serbia to limit its security ties with Russia to the arms trade and training’.
Also, it is mentioned that in the case of the EU membership, Serbia must be totally devoted to the union and adhere its policy toward Russia, including the sanctions.
It is emphasized that the EU and the US should resolve the inner conflicts of these countries, such the conflict between Macedonia and Greece, Serbia and Kosovo.
However, there is also Montenegro that is new 29th NATO member that demonstrates its firm commitment to the Alliance.
According to the report, the US and EU should oppose Russia in the cyber-influence, establishing the cyber security. All needed measures, including all spheres, should be held through the NATO and EU.
