Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, stated that the U.S. would never recognize Crimea’s annexation and would continue insisting on the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, as The New York Times reports.
‘Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States will never recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea and will continue to insist that Ukraine's territorial integrity be restored,” the news agency reports.
According to Pompeo, Trump and Putin did not come to an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine.
“Pompeo says Trump made clear to Putin that the so-called Minsk Accords to settle the Ukraine conflict is the right path forward. He also reiterated U.S. support for an investigation that held Russia responsible for downing a Malaysian airliner over east Ukraine in 2014,” the message says.
Earlier, U.S. President Trump had a meeting with the Russian President Putin in Helsinki. At the joint briefing, Trump stated that he followed the position of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. Yet, Putin responded that “Crimea’s matter is closed”.
