U.S. President Trump has ordered the Pentagon to withdraw most of the US troops from Somalia. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal with reference to officials.

The 700 American soldiers stationed in Somalia were tasked with helping to destroy the al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group. In the future, they will move to bases in other countries. US troops are expected to leave the country by early next year, officials said.

The Pentagon said in a statement to lawmakers that despite the withdrawal of troops, US targets in Somalia have not changed. It is noted that the US military will continue to carry out brief counter-terrorism operations in this country.

Earlier, Donald Trump on Twitter said that all US military personnel serving in Afghanistan should be withdrawn from the country by December 25.

"By Christmas, the small remaining number of our brave men and women serving in Afghanistan must be back home!" - he wrote.
