The United States plans to deploy military equipment and 500 militarymen in Lithuania in October. This is a part of the six-month rotation program, which was approved after the annexation of Crimea. The Voice of America reports this.
In addition to the military, 30 Abrams tanks will be deployed in Lithuania. American troops will leave Lithuania after military exercises in the spring of 2020.
"The message is that US forces can arrive at any time and at any place where they are needed, and in the quantity that is needed," the report said.
Thus, the United States plans to increase the mobility of its troops instead of a permanent deployment.
The United States believes that the US military presence is part of the overall containment policy of NATO countries towards Russia.
At the same time, the Pentagon plans to reduce the list of military projects in Europe and stop funding them. The cost of the reduction program will be $ 700 million.
It was previously reported that the United States could provide Ukraine with $ 30 million less military assistance.
According to the US Department of Defense, military assistance to Ukraine from the United States in 2014 amounted to $ 1.5 billion.
