U.S. Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker believes that Ukraine should play the role of a leader in the Normandy Format, as Voice of America reported.

“Ukraine should play the role of the leader in the Normandy process. At the same time, the U.S. will continue to support its actions,” Volker said.

He noted that the decision of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on the disengagement of the forces was an extremely positive step, which draws attention to the inaction of Russia.

As it was reported earlier, US President Donald Trump at a meeting with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Osaka raised the issue of Ukrainian sailors kept in a Russian prison.

According to Trump, Putin gave the U.S. President "all the necessary explanations concerning Ukrainian sailors" detained by the Russian authorities in the Kerch Strait last year.
