An agreement between the US and the Taliban is expected to be signed on February 29, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, Interfax reported.
"The United States and the Taliban are engaged in large-scale negotiations to promote a political settlement that would put an end to the war in Afghanistan, reduce the presence of the US and allied forces in the country, and ensure that no terrorist group no longer uses the land of Afghanistan to threaten the United States and their allies," said in a message released by the US State Department on behalf of Pompeo.
"In recent weeks, in consultation with the Government of National Unity (Afghanistan), the US negotiators in Doha have agreed with the Taliban to significantly reduce violence in Afghanistan at the national level. After the successful implementation of this agreement, it is expected that the agreements between the US and the Taliban will be signed. We are preparing for the fact that the signing will take place on February 29, soon after that inter-Afghan negotiations will begin, "the report says.
According to Pompeo, "the challenges remain, but the progress made in Doha inspires hope and presents a real opportunity, and the United States is calling on all Afghans to use this moment."
