The U.S. Senate has overridden President Donald Trump’s veto of a $740 billion defense policy bill. It is reported by the C-Span 2 TV channel.
It is important that the project provides for Ukraine's financial support in the amount of $ 250 million.
80 Senators voted in favour to override Trump's veto, and 12 voted against. Under US law, a presidential veto can be overridden if the bill in question is supported by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress.
The Senate vote during a rare New Year's Day session is a humiliating blow for Trump, who has only 20 days to go before leaving office.
Earlier, the upper house of the US Congress prepared a bill on the military budget for 2021, which involves the allocation of another $ 250 million for Ukraine's defense.
In addition, the ban on financing any activity that involves the recognition of the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over Crimea will be expanded.
The restriction on military cooperation with Russia is also extended, which, however, does not apply to bilateral military dialogue in order to reduce the risk of conflict.
