A group of senators from the Republic Party demands from the administration of President Joe Biden to impose new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, or, they will block approval of two candidates for leading positions at the U.S. Treasury Department as Bloomberg reported.
The senators promised to block hearings at the Senate Banking Committee the two candidatures Brian Nelson and Elizabeth Rosenberg. They were nominated to positions overseeing sanctions implementation. The Republicans also demanded to abolish sanction preferences introduced by Biden’s administration toward Nord Stream 2 AG.
“The Nord Stream II natural gas pipeline directly harms the national security interests of the United States and our allies and partners. If completed, this project will increase Vladimir Putin’s malign influence over Europe, destabilize Ukraine’s fragile security, and encourage further Russian aggression,” the letter to Treasury Secretary states.
On July 21, the U.S. and Germany made a joint statement in support of Ukraine, European energy security, and climate goals on the results of the talks on prospects of the launch of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The same day, Ukraine initiated consultations with the European Commission and Germany regarding the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which threatens the security of Ukraine and violates the principles of diversification of the EU Energy Union.
