The USA suspects Syrian authorities of developing new types of chemical weapons, and President Trump is ready to consider military action in order to deter possible attacks, as Reuters reported sourcing American authorities.
The U.S. believes that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has secretly kept some.of Syria’s stash of chemical weapons despite the agreement between the USA and Russia, according to which Damascus must have handed over all the weapons of mass destruction in 2014.
Instead of this, Assad’s forces developed the chemical weapons and continued using it in smaller amounts after the deadly attack last April that drew a U.S. missile strike on a Syrian airbase.
Characteristics of some of those recent attacks suggest that Syria may be developing new weapons and methods for delivering poison chemicals, possibly to make it harder to trace their origin, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity, but they declined to provide specifics.
“We reserve the right to use military force to prevent or deter the use of chemical weapons,” one official said.
According to another official, Trump administration hopes that the international sanctions and diplomatic pressure will help put Syria’s developments in line.
