U.S. responds to arrest of American citizen accused of espionage in Russia

The US State Department responded to the arrest of an American by the Russia’s Federal Security Service in Moscow on espionage charges. According to Reuters, the representative of the State Department said that Russia had notified them of the arrest, consular access to the American is expected.

"We have requested this access and expect the Russian authorities to provide it," the State Department spokesman said. However, he did not specify the identity of the detained American or the reasons for his detention.

The FSB previously reported that this is Paul Whelan. The Russian government said that the American were detained "during a special action."

The investigation department of the Federal Security Service of Russia initiated a criminal case against a US citizen under article 276 (espionage) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation,’ reads the message.
