Nord Stream 2

The United States of America plans to pass some new decisions regarding Nord Stream 2, the Russian gas pipeline. Ned Price, the spokesman of U.S. Department of the State said so at a briefing.

"We will keep on taking actions regarding individuals and companies that participate in actions befalling the sanctions in order to demonstrate our disagreement with this project that remains", the spokesman said.

According to Price, Nord Stream 2 is a poor deal for European partners.

The U.S. official also said that the White House would do everything not to let Russia "use energy as a tool of compulsion against Ukraine or any other country".

As we reported, the Biden administration will waive sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG and its CEO Matthias Warnig who controls the construction of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline into Germany. Biden said that sanctions would damage relations with Europe. In addition, Joe Biden in this decision was guided by considerations of national security. Sanctions against the pipeline were first imposed by the administration of Biden's predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, in late 2019.

Germany does not intend to abandon Nord Stream 2 and considers it a business project.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State said that German government has been looking into an opportunity to compensate for possible losses that Ukraine may suffer after the launch of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
