U.S. Navy dock landing ship heads to Black Sea

The ship transit confirms determination of the U.S. to provide security for the Black Sea and strengthens the relations with NATO allies and partners in the region

The USS Fort McHenry, the dock landing ship is sent to the Black Sea. This is reported on the website of the US Navy 6th operational fleet command.

"The Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), with embarked elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), began its north-bound transit of the Dardanelles Strait, en route to the Black Sea," the message said.

According to the commander of the US Navy’s 6th operational fleet, Vice Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the Fort McHenry transit confirms her country's determination to provide security for the Black Sea and strengthens strong relations with NATO allies and partners in the region.

"Our routine operations in the Black Sea also demonstrate the inherent flexibility and capability of U.S. 6th Fleet naval forces," she added.

It is noteworthy that the ship, which can accommodate about 500 U.S. Marines, is equipped with a dock chamber for five hovercraft transport boats intended for the landing of marines and the military equipment.

Its displacement makes 16.1 thousand tons, the length is 190 meters.

Besides, the ship is equipped with anti-aircraft artillery and rocket weaponry.
