US leader Joe Biden claimed that Washington may boycott the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.

The American government has been considering a diplomatic boycott due to the violations of human rights in China, writes Reuters.

"Something we're considering", Biden told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during their recent meeting.

"A U.S. decision not to send diplomats would be a rebuke of Chinese President Xi Jinping just days after Xi and Biden worked to ease tensions in a virtual summit, their first extensive talks since Biden took office in January", reads the article.

The outlet cited Jen Psaki, the White House spokeswoman who expressed Washington's concerns over human rights violations in China.

"There are areas that we do have concerns about: human rights abuses. We have serious concerns. Certainly, there are a range of factors as we look at what our presence would be," she said.

The diplomatic kind of boycott means that the official delegations will be absent at the Games; the US athletes, however, will perform.

As is known, the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing will take place in February 2020.
