U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Ukraine Kristina Kvien said that the United States could increase the number of US troops in Ukraine due to the aggravation of the situation in Donbas.
"While we are here in Yavorovo, tens of thousands of Russian troops are near the Ukrainian border and on the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, and their number is increasing. The United States and our allies and NATO partners in Europe are deeply concerned about this escalation," she said.
Kvien stressed that Ukraine has shown wonderful restraint in the face of Russian intimidation and aggression.
“Against the background of Russian provocations, it is important to remember that Ukraine in 2021 and the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2021 are significantly different from what they were in 2014. We have 160 US troops here on a permanent basis, and, if, according to our estimates, needs will change and the number needs to be increased, we will consider this issue," the Charge d'Affaires added.
Meanwhile, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that there are 80,000 Russian soldiers and 30,000 pro-Russian militants near the border with Ukraine.
"On the eastern border and in the Crimea, Russia has deployed about 80,000 troops, to which should be added another 30,000 pro-Russian militants and the official military of Russia in Donbas. It is definitely not in the interests of Europe that such a military potential could be used for its intended purpose, like this Moscow will want. The expansion of the war can only bring new suffering and problems to everyone, and no one will benefit from it," he said.
