The U.S. imposed sanctions on four companies and seven individuals, affiliated with Russian businessman Yevgeniy Prigozhin, due to interference in the American midterm elections in 2018. This was reported by the Department of Finance and the US Department of State on September 30.

"In response to Russia's attempts to influence the US democratic process, the United States imposes sanctions on four companies and seven individuals affiliated with the Internet Research Agency and its sponsor Yevgeniy Prigozhin," said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Sanctions also apply to three private jets and a Prigozhin yacht. These objects are not allowed to cross the US border.

Yevgeniy Prigozhin finances the Internet Research Agency, also known as the “troll factory.” The United States suspects that with the help of this resource, the Kremlin tried to intervene not only in the presidential election in 2016, but also in the midterm elections in 2018.

In connection with the midterm elections in the United States in 2018, the Internet Research Agency conducted a series of events that were part of a broad campaign to influence the US political system, according to the U.S. Treasury.

The Troll Factory sought to discredit candidates whom were considered hostile to Russia through social networks.
