The governments of the EU and the United States welcomed the fact of the arrest of Roman Nasirov, the detained head of Ukraine’s State Fiscal Service. The EU delegation in Ukraine and the U.S. Embassy released an official joint statement on Tuesday, March 7.
‘We hail the court’s decision; however, the latest events prove that there is a need of specialized anti-corruption court. These events also show why the future audits of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau should be independent and transparent, providing fair analysis of this agency’s activities in 2016,’ the message reads.
The authorities also said it is ‘critically important’ for Ukraine to reach tangible progress in fighting corruption; that would mean fulfilling the demands of Euromaidan protesters, as well as attracting direct foreign investments that are vital of the development of the Ukrainian economy.
As it is known, the head of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine is suspected in abuse of authority and embezzlement of public funds totaling some $74 million. Investigation considers that Nasirov, acting in the interests of MP Onyshchenko, groundlessly provided tax obligations by installments for a number of enterprises in terms of "gas case".
