Belarus will cut the diplomatic and administrative staff of the US Embassy, and the visa procedures will be toughened. Press office of Belarusian Foreign Ministry reported that on June 3, citing press secretary Anatoliy Glaz.
According to the official, Minsk recalls the decision to let the US Agency for International Development work in Belarus. At the same time, he claimed that the Belarusian government was not primed for escalation with the U.S., and it is ready to keep the contacts based on posession of equal rights.
This latest step is considered to be the retaliatory action taken by Belarus, in return to the US sanctions against Belarusian companies.
On May 29, rallies were held in a number of European cities within the framework of the action "Global Picket of Solidarity with Belarus". Hundreds of people gathered at protests in Poland and Lithuania to express support for the opposition in neighboring Belarus. They called for the release of Roman Protasevich and Sofia Sapega, the BBC reports. It is noted that protests took place throughout Europe, as well as in the United States and Australia.
