The United States government demanded to close Russian consulate in San Francisco and two consulate objects in Washington and New York. This was mentioned in the message posted at the official website of Department of the State.
‘In the spirit of parity invoked by the Russians, we are requiring the Russian Government to close its Consulate General in San Francisco, a chancery annex in Washington, D.C., and a consular annex in New York City. These closures will need to be accomplished by September 2. With this action both countries will remain with three consulates each. While there will continue to be a disparity in the number of diplomatic and consular annexes, we have chosen to allow the Russian Government to maintain some of its annexes in an effort to arrest the downward spiral in our relationship,’ reads the message.
The United States expressed hopes that ‘having moved toward the Russian Federation’s desire for parity’, both parties can avoid further ‘retaliatory actions’. However, Washington said it is ‘prepared to take further action as necessary and as warranted’.
As is known, in July, the Russian government demanded that the U.S. decreases its diplomatic staff in this country to 455 people. Besides, the Kremlin prohibited using diplomatic residential houses in Moscow and Moscow oblast. Russian authorities explained this was their response to the U.S. sanctions imposed by the-then president Barak Obama in December 2016.
