Dozens of U.S. Congress members demand to recognize Azov regiment as a terrorist organization. This is mentioned in the letter of New York congressman Mark Rose (Republicans) who initiated the appeal and put the respective letter on his Twitter page.
Another 39 Congress members - all Democrats - signed the letter, which urges to include the regiment into the list of foreign terrorist organizations. The list includes ISIS, Al Quaeda, HAMAS and other infamous organizations. Azov is believed to be involved in the Christchurch mosque shootings that occurred in March 2019.
"Violent white supremacist groups meet all of the Department of the State's criteria for inclusion on the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, but for some reason they refuse to label these groups as terrorists that they are, hampering law enforcement's ability to keep us safe", reads the post by Rose.
Azov, the volunteer battalion of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine was officially founded in May 2014. Many men willingly joined it to defend Donbas in the armed conflict with Russian mercenaries. In September 2014, the battalion grew into a regiment; two months after that, Azov joined the line-up of the National Guard of Ukraine, which let it create its own artillery, tank and other units.
